I believe CA has learned a lot from the first two games, specifically on prioritizing certain aspects such as mortal empires/ campaign map optimization.

I will assume that production started somewhere in the middle of this timeline, say June 2019.Ģ020 will be the 5 year anniversary of the TWW series and the 20th anniversary of the Total War series as a whole.ĬA recently seems to like Q2 or late-Q3 early-Q4 releases. In the February 2019 blog, they seemed to hint at some of the mo-cap being down already by saying "with some excellent performances by our resident mocap artists now in the can and waiting to have that all-important digital flesh applied to their bones." This is generally a final step in game pre-production as this gives everything needed to finally start sculpting and using in-game models.

With 7 months between the 2 aforementioned blog posts, it is hard to gauge when full production started. The time period between pre-production and full production is unclear. The first post regarding it was in March 2018. It is unclear when TWW3 started pre-production. However, both Norsca and the Mortal Empires campaign gave trouble and were both delayed.
TWW2 has a development time of roughly 2 years, 4 months (1 year added from above timeline) due to pre-production starting before TWW1 released. Completely new skeletons, animations, and mechanics must be invented and made real. This is due to having to develop a new engine as well as being the first time CA is creating a fantasy setting Total War game. TWW1 will have the longest production time of all 3 games. The last mention of pre-production before this blog post was in February 2019.

SeptemTWW3 is confirmed to be in full production in this Development Update Blog. While neither post specifically states TWW3, the March one clearly states "currently in early pre-production." This is where misinformation begins as many users and game news sites point to the blog from June 2018 as the first time TWW3 is mentioned. March 2018 - The first hints at TWW3 are revealed in that month's edition of What the Team's are Working On. The game was in pre-production before the release of TWW1, but for how long is unknown. Septem1 year, 4 months after TWW1 release, TWW2 is released. It was released 3 years, 5 months later in May 2016. While not exact, we can use the beginning of 2013 as the starting point of development for TWW1. So with this post, I'm hoping to give an all-encompassing, evolving database for what we know, what we can expect, and finally my opinion on the release date of TWW3.ĭecember 2012 - SEGA announces a partnership with Games Workshop, with CA creating a Total War game around the IP.
I've seen some discussions (both here and on the forums) on when TWW3 will be coming, but some have used either incorrect information or have unrealistically optimistic or pessimistic opinions. However, I find myself more and more excited for the next installment of the series rather than the next LP or rework. Like many people, I'm always excited to see what's coming next for the TWW series.
